Wood industry is moving ahead with innovative ideas and techniques to provide solutions in various sectors. While adapting to changing markets with news ideas and methods, wood industry has come up with great innovation in the form of the world’s tallest wooden wind turbine tower, opening doors for new areas.
Globally wind energy generation is getting more and more attention to fulfill the energy demand. This has created lot of scope for innovation and modernization in the wind turbines and it’s infrastructure. Wood industry, with the modern techniques and innovation is providing wood alternatives for metal in many sectors. With it’s inherent qualities wood material provides unique benefits. In this series, wooden wind turbine tower in Sweden, has attracted global attention with first of it’s kind efforts.
Swedish startup Modvion is building the world’s tallest wooden wind turbine tower for an energy company in Sweden, and the last wooden modules, made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL), are currently being manufactured in Modvion’s factory in Gothenburg, which was inaugurated last year.
The modules of wind turbine tower are assembled at the construction site into seven sections that will make up the finished tower. Work on site began earlier this year with the laying of the foundation and now modules are transported to site where section assembly has begun.
A 2-megawatt turbine will be mounted on the tower, produced by the leading Danish wind turbine manufacturer, Vestas, also a shareholder in Modvion since 2021. Including the blades, the total height of the wind turbine will be 150 meters. This is the first time that Modvion’s tower technology will be paired with a turbine from Vestas. The wind turbine tower is planned to be in operation before the end of the year.
With the successful installation and operation, the wooden turbine tower, will create many opportunities for wood industry in this sector.
