India’s woodworking and furniture industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, evolving from a fragmented market into a structured and globally competitive sector. In a special conversation with Modern Woodwork, Sonia Prashar, Managing Director and Chairperson of NürnbergMesse India, discusses how technology, digital commerce and policy reforms are reshaping the industry. With India now ranking as the second-largest furniture market in Asia-Pacific and a key player in global supply chains, she highlights the industry’s growing influence, investment potential and the role of IndiaWood in accelerating its next phase of expansion.
Modern Woodwork:India’s furniture industry has undergone significant changes over the past 25 years. How would you describe its transformation? Ms. Sonia Prashar: The sector has evolved from a fragmented market into a structured and globally competitive industry. Advancements in technology, design innovation, and consumer preferences have played a crucial role in this shift. Today, India is not just a large consumer but also an emerging global player in furniture manufacturing and woodworking.
MW: How is India strengthening its position in global furniture markets? SP: India is currently the second-largest furniture market in the Asia-Pacific region and the fourth-largest consumer globally. The domestic market is expanding rapidly, driven by the demand for well-designed, cost-effective furniture. With plywood consumption expected to reach USD 3.8 billion by 2028-29, the industry is poised for exponential growth. Additionally, strategic policy measures and an increasing focus on quality are helping India gain a stronger foothold in global supply chains.
MW: How is e-commerce reshaping the Indian woodworking and furniture industry? SP: Digital transformation has been a game-changer. The online furniture sector is projected to grow at a CAGR of 27%, reaching Rs. 16,000 crore (USD 1.92 billion) by 2025. Digital platforms are making furniture more accessible, with brands investing in VR-enabled retail experiences to enhance customer decision-making. At the same time, last-mile delivery and logistics improvements are helping companies expand their presence beyond metro cities into Tier II and III markets.
MW: What role do government policies play in supporting domestic furniture manufacturing? SP: The Indian government has taken significant steps to boost domestic production. Measures such as increased import duties on foreign furniture to 25%, financial incentives for furniture clusters, and the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, are ensuring that Indian-made furniture meets international quality standards. These initiatives are strengthening India’s position as a self-sufficient manufacturing hub.
